3 - 5 weeks to go.....
Things we've done so far:
medicals, police checks, HIV tests, chest xrays (as a good friend pointed out to me - why? It's not like we're going to bring more TB in!), vaccinations, new passports, certified copies of our degrees, freak out...
Things we haven't done:
Ha! Everything else!
Today I had a little panic, after Dan showed me a PNG blog that documents local news. PNG is one of those countries where if there is a murder, they show the dead body on the front page of the newspaper completely uncensored. This particular article showed a bus crash, with people flung from the vehicle, slumped over the front of the bus, blood everywhere. I'm sure you get the picture. It really upset me to see this, and it took me a while to realise that horrible road deaths happen all the time here - it's just that we don't print the pictures in the newspaper. Another blog I was reading was talking about how rife corruption is in the government. An Australian newspaper article suggested that rather than making things better, an injection of cash into the goverment from the new LNG project could possibly make things worse.
Not to mention this and this. Quite depressing really.
After yet another long discussion we agreed that we still want to go for some reason, so we continue with our planning, packing and procrastination...
Don't forget to pack biscuit! Alan
